Is Photopea a real Photoshop killer, or just a decent free alternative for quick edits? Worth ditching Adobe?

I’m tired of Adobe’s subscription fees. Photopea sounds great for occasional edits, but can it handle serious projects? Does it REALLY compare to Photoshop, or is it just a simplified version? And how annoying are those ads, really?  🤔

  1. Think of Photopea as an incredibly useful Swiss Army knife. It’s not going to replace specialized tools for every single situation, but it’s amazing how much it can do in a pinch. The fact that it runs in a browser is a HUGE win. I’ve used it on Chromebooks, at work when I didn’t have Photoshop installed, and even on my phone in an emergency. You can import Adobe files, this means that you can use your files, edit and export.

The ads are definitely a trade-off for the free price, but honestly, for $5 a month to get rid of them and get some extra features, it’s a no-brainer if you use it even semi-regularly. It’s a fraction of the cost of Photoshop.

So, Photopea might not completely replace Photoshop for everyone, but it’s an incredibly valuable tool to have in your arsenal, and it can definitely handle a surprising amount of “serious” work. I would really recommend you use it sometimes.

  1. Yo Jhon! Photoshop is like dating a supermodel. Beautiful, powerful, and costs you EVERYTHING. Photopea? It’s like that cool, reliable friend who’s always there for you, no strings attached (except maybe those pesky ads LOL). Okay, in reality, the ads are kinda annoying, but I think that you can pay monthly subscription to remove that. You can totally block that with an ad blocker but you can remove the ad using the official way. I would definitely recommend to keep it for a while, see if you can leave with that, and later pay if you want (or keep the ads) 😅

Seriously though, think about what you actually do with Photoshop. If you’re just cropping, resizing, adjusting brightness, and adding the occasional filter, Photopea will cover you. If you’re doing crazy-complex compositing and retouching every single day, then maybe stick with Photoshop. But give Photopea a whirl! You might be surprised how much you can accomplish! And the best part? You can use Photopea on your device without using the software, that’s AMAZING.

  2. I wouldn’t say Photopea is a total Photoshop killer for professionals who live and breathe Adobe all day. However, for many users, it’s an incredibly capable alternative. Think of it this way: If you’re a carpenter building custom furniture every day, you need top-of-the-line professional tools. But if you’re just hanging pictures and doing occasional home repairs, a good quality, versatile tool set will do the trick.

Photopea is that versatile toolset. It handles a LOT of what Photoshop does – layers, masks, filters, the whole shebang. It even opens and saves PSD files, which is HUGE for collaboration. Where it might fall short is in really advanced, niche features, or if you’re deeply embedded in the Adobe ecosystem with other apps. But for most people, it’s surprisingly powerful. As for handling ‘serious projects,’ it can absolutely do it! I’ve used it for creating social media graphics, editing photos for my website, and even designing some basic marketing materials. No problem there.
